Upcycle Your Jewelry for Earth Day!

Earth Day started on April 22,1970 with the hopes of educating and spreading awareness on protecting the places we hold sacred. After witnessing a devastating oil spill off the coast of California, Sen. Gaylord Nelson organized the first ever national Earth Day! 20 million people across the United States participated! By 2010, Earth Day’s 40th anniversary, more than 1 billion people in more than 180 countries around the world were estimated to have celebrated in some form. Each year it becomes more and more crucial for each and every one of us to do our part and go green!

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to make fabulous jewelry for yourself out of something that would otherwise be thrown out! Wait until you see what you can do with an old plastic bottle or even that outdated magazine lying around. In honor of Earth Day I decided to take a look around and see what trash I could upcycle into fun jewelry! The beauty about Upcycling is there are endless creative possibilities when it comes to reusing everyday items! Try and do your part this Earth Day and every day by finding ways to reuse!

Once recycled, magazines cannot be used to make new magazines.  However, they do help to make newspaper, tissue, writing paper and paperboard. This necklace is made with magazine pages that have been sitting around for some time. By folding the paper and rolling it up into a wheel shape, you can make fun pendants to incorporate into your jewelry designs! I used Diamond Glaze to coat the paper and give it a more glossy appearance. With 5-Minute-Epoxy I connected each piece together, added jump rings and attached black Silk Ribbon to complete the necklace.

Did you know it takes about 400 years for aluminum to break down naturally? I decided to use a 13/16” Circle Punch to punch out circle shapes from an aluminum can. I used the 1.25 Metal Hole Punch Pliers and made holes that I connected with jump rings to make this fun and funky necklace. I used the extra aluminum circles and made some earrings to match!

From recycling a single plastic bottle you are conserving what would be six hours of light for a 60-watt light bulb! I decided to experiment with some plastic soda bottles that Cody, one of the jewelry designers, had lying around! I cut as many different size circles as I could out of a couple bottles, I turned to the Butane Micro Torch to carefully heat up the plastic. You can also use a heat gun as long as you hold the plastic in place. Keeping the flame at a good distance from the plastic, you could start to see the ends curling and taking different forms. Once I had my desired look I punched a hole through the center using the 1.25 Hole Punch Pliers. Using  Size 8 Turquoise Nylon Bead Cord, I strung each piece on and made a fun modern statement necklace.

Your best bet when trying to recycle leather is to find another use for it! Using some leather strips bought from a thrift store, I decided to go with the trend and cut the leather to form this fringe, I punched holes in the top corners using the 1.25 Hole Punch Pliers and connected the chain using jump rings! There was some extra leather so I cut it out in the shape of leaves and made a pair of earrings (hanging from the potted plant) to go with my necklace! A quick and fun way to add some edge to your look.

Tuesday Tips and Tricks!

When you are applying glue to tiny areas like flat back crystals or the knot at the end of your beading thread it can be tempting to use your fingernails to scrape away extra glue or position things perfectly. Even hard-working crafty ladies like to have nice nails, so here’s a tip to save your manicure! Next time you need to apply glue to a small area try using a toothpick or something we all have lying around – wire scraps! By using a “tool” with a small tip you’ll have more control over where your glue goes and how much you apply. Squeeze a small amount of glue on to a piece of newspaper or cardboard. Then use the tip of your toothpick or wire scrap to pick up just enough glue and apply it to your piece. And even clean-up is easy since all you have to do is throw out the paper and toothpick or wire scrap when you’re finished!

 Happy Tuesday! –Gretchen

Fastenables by Vintaj

Fastenables by Vintaj are great little components that you can fasten to just about anything you can think of. Of course, my first choice is to incorporate them into my jewelry designs, but they would also be great for altered art projects. They come in two great metals; natural brass and eco-friendly Arte Metal which is made from natural ferrite ore. You can alter their color easily with acrylic paint or alcohol inks, embed them into Ice Resin or Glossy Accents to make a dimensional collage pendant or attach them using rivets, jump rings, wire or cord. I am a huge fan of riveting, so I used the riveting and piercing system to make all of the pieces in the above picture which could be used for pendants or earrings!

These fun earrings were made with the Natural Brass Perennial Laurel Fastenable. I glued on Swarovski Elements Crystal Flat Back Rhinestones to add color and cover the holes.

I created the pendant in this necklace using acrylic paint, alcohol inks and glossy accents. I added a little extra sparkle with some Swarovski Elements Crystal Flat Back Rhinestones to cover the holes.

In these earrings we painted the Natural Brass Beaded Flower Washer with acrylic paint and then layered with the Natural Brass Gearwheel Fastenable and Natural Brass Trillium Petals Fastenable for some super cute earrings.

I hope this inspires you to work some Fastenables into your next jewelry project!

Happy Beading! – Cody

Mockingjay Pin

We’re all big fans of the Hunger Games series here at FusionBeads.com, and we were so excited to hear it was going to be released as a film that we all got together last week to go and see it! Have you seen it yet? To celebrate the movie’s premier, we decided to create a handmade homage to these beautifully intense books and made a Mockingjay pin for all our customers who also love the series. You can make this pin in a variety of different ways, but I decided to saw the design out of sheet metal and glue a pin bar to the back. It wasn’t so easy to get the Mockingjay detailing, so I just used a texturing hammer to achieve a feathery effect. We hope you enjoy the candid photos and the finished product – we’d love to see what you made for the Hunger Games!

To create a template for the image, I found a picture of the Mockingjay pin on the internet. I sized the image for 2 inches and printed it onto sticky white paper, which I then stuck to 24 gauge brass sheet metal. I then set up my saw blade in my saw frame; once the saw was ready to go, I sawed the design out of the sheet metal. When this was finished, I sawed out the negative spaces within the design. Finally, I sanded and filed the sheet metal to smooth the sharp edges. Our helpful Sawing Tools and Supplies page will give you a handy link to the sheet metal and all the tools I used to make this piece!
