When making handmade ear wires, one thing to keep in mind when you are planning your design is how long the wire that hangs behind your ear lobe will be. Typically, you will need at least .75″ to 1″ of wire behind the ear to keep the ear wire in place. If you have less wire than this, gravity may kick in and the weight of the beads on your ear wire could cause it to slide right out of your ear.
For longer ear wire styles (such as kidney ear wires), you may need more than the wire measurement listed above to account for the longer finding length. If your design calls for a shorter length of wire behind the ear and you cannot alter it, consider using an earring back to hold the earring in place while it is being worn.
