St. Patrick’s Day is one of my absolute favorite holidays to create jewelry for, thanks to my undying love of green and gold color combinations. This year, I decided to step outside my usual palette and try something new – an Irish flag made from chain maille!
To create the flag, I used the popular European 4-in-1 chain maille weave. Its simple pattern and flat structure made it an ideal technique to use for this piece. I matched the colors of the flag to the colors of our jump ring packs and chose to use 5mm 20 gauge jump rings in green, ultra white, and orange. Once the flag was finished, I used gold jump rings to attach the top row of the flag onto the links of a length of matte gold plated base metal chain. I added a simple matte gold clasp to the end of the chain, and my necklace was done!
This quick and easy design can also be easily adapted for many tricolor and quadricolor flags. The European 4-in-1 weave is very forgiving, so this piece can easily be made by chain maille beginners!
