Tuesday Tips and Tricks!

Today’s tip is for those of you who have yet to master the art of opening and closing a jump ring! I know, it sounds easy, but so many people try to do it without learning the proper method. Many people think that the way to open a jump ring is to pull the two sides of the ring apart from each other, and they close it by pushing the two sides back together. This way is instinctive, but it will weaken the wire and ruin the circular shape of the jump ring. Here’s how it should be done!

Step 1

Step 1
Begin with an open (unsoldered) jump ring.

Step 2

Step 2
Grasp the jump ring on either side of the opening with two pairs of chain nose pliers. Or if you don’t have two pairs of pliers, you can use one pair of pliers and your fingers.

Step 3

Step 3
Close the jump ring by moving the sides together in a back and forth wiggle motion.

Step 4

Step 4
Gently move the right side up and left side down.

Step 5

Step 5
While moving them back and forth, over lap the sides of the ring so there is tension when the two sides meet.

Step 6

Step 6
Snap the two sides together to close the ring. The seam should be closed tightly.

Step 7

Step 7
Congratulations! You have closed a jump ring.
