Tuesday Tips and Tricks!

It’s that time again! Time for this week’s tip, and I promise that this is a great one! If you want to save some money AND add more customization to your jewelry, you should start making your own ear wires! Buying wire is much less expensive than buying ear wires, and you have the added option to customize each pair of ear wires that you make! I know that it may sound difficult to make ear wires, but it really isn’t – at least not when you have full color images that show you each step of the process! Check out our two free techniques – Making an Ear Wire and Making a French Hoop Ear Wire. If you’re like me, I’m sure you’ll get hooked on these techniques and find that you never need to buy ear wires ever again! You can customize these ear wires by choosing any wire that you want (we recommend 20 gauge half hard wire), making the hoops in a variety of sizes and, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even use our Flattening a Wire Form Technique to hammer parts of the ear wires for added texture and hardness!

I love making my own earwires and would like to partially flatten them to help them keep their shape. But, when I use the chasing hammer with a bench block, the edge of the hammer leaves marks on the wire and isn’t smooth like in the “Flattening a Wire Form Technique”. It even leaves marks on my bench block. I’m not sure what I am doing wrong. Do you have any tips to avoid this? Thanks!
